Tornado Tube

Simple, yet clever 1" dia. by 3" long plastic device to demonstrate the vortex effect of a tornado. Partially fill with water one of the two half-gallon size plastic soda bottles which you supply. Screw the bottles into opposite ends of the tube which we supply. Tip so the full bottle is on top and give it a circular starting whirl. Presto! You have a vortex. Call it a tornado if you're a meteorologist, a Charybdis if you're a classicist, or a whirlpool if you're into oceanography. Lots of fun and a fine opportunity to attempt to explain the effects of the earth's rotation on water draining out of a bathtub. The phenomena are related we're told, but good luck!!

Simple Circuit

An easy way to light up the kids' eyes! Teach them to wire a simple circuit with our basic components. The knife switch is mounted on a 1-1/2"x3" black-plastic base. The miniature plastic socket holds a standard flashlight bulb with a 14 mm dia screw base. We pack 6 volt and 3 volt round bulbs, or 1.5 volt bell-shaped bulbs, (5) to a package.(Bulbs are rated slightly higher to prevent them from burning out.) Or hook up the black plastic and metal 2" x 4-1/4" telegraph key with brass contacts and (2) terminal posts with nuts. Our blue-plastic holder for (1) "D" battery has a small tab at each end to hook a lead to, and a 1/8" square mounting hole at each corner. You add the mounting surface and the know-how. Actual bulb voltage listed in parenthesis.

Quite A Kit

Warning!  WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD-Small Parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.

We're really charged up about this modular Electronic Lab from Maxitronix(tm) that appeals to both girls and boys. The 4-in-1 set of interactive action kits includes colorful 5-1/2" x 3" x 1-1/8" plastic housings and components to build an electric bell, motor, generator and meter. As the manual says, they're "safe, solderless, educational and fun!" And the manual is the best we've ever seen. Every part and every step is illustrated and labeled (it doesn't presume you can tell an egg lug from a tapping screw), and it explains HOW each experiment works. Kids trying out the 10 suggested experiments learn to reverse a motor's direction, operate the bell or motor with the generator, use the meter to measure electricity and more. Requires (2) "AA" batteries (not included). This is an exceptional set for boys and girls aged 10 and up.

What A Concept!

Backups! Manuals, reports, even personal genealogies aren't complete without their electronic backup. You and your trusty paper punch can easily make them fit over (2) rings of a (3) ring binder. The double sleeve is transparent, 6" x 5-1/2", with a white-vinyl divider to separate (2) CDs or disks. Just think – data where you can get your hands on it, even if computers and personnel have turned over thrice since it was created!

All From Foam!

Warning!  WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD-Small Parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.

What do you get when you take several slabs of a firm foam in vivid colors, die-cut them so that hundreds of strangely shaped pieces can be punched from them, and pack them with a page of methodical, if unbelievably detailed, directions? You get a meticulously constructed vehicle, somewhere between a toy and a soft sculpture, that required no glue or paint. You get a primarily red and black fire engine with a 9" long frame, or a power shovel of mostly primary colors with 7-1/2" treads. You also get a great project for long solitary evenings -- or a LOT of adult/child bonding. Special kits for very special people.

The American Handy Books

PC purists please move on to other items. These two books are exact reprints of 1882 and 1887 editions: “American Girls Handy Book”: How to amuse yourself and others, and “American Boys Handy Book”: What to do and how to do it. With 441 pp (Boys) and 474 pp (Girls) these books are absolutely crammed with ideas for activities, craft projects, information about nature and the world around us as well as charming Victoriana from the founders of boy and girl scouting. A real gift from Great Great Grandma’s attic. Both you and the kids will adore them and use them constantly, and we think members of both genders will enjoy both books in today’s world.

Back To Basics

Warning!  WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD-Small Parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.

It could have been called an Alabama Buzzer after Alabama Vest, the man who invented it. Or a Clegghorn, after Thaddeus Von Clegg, the clock master who fabricated the first one. But the hand-crafted 4-3/4" long steel instrument was a simple amusement, and the 1840s were a simple time. So it's simply a kazoo.
