Pop one of these roughly 1-1/4" dia stones into the toe of a sock, smash it with a hammer, and be the first person ever to see your real-as-Nature-makes-it geode!! Ninety percent of them have the familiar beautiful white crystals inside. Formed by volcanic action, they are found all over the world, but ours are from Mexico. There is no way to tell from the outside if they have crystal centers, but we will send you two just to raise your odds, and we haven't had a dud yet in our stores!! Much much more fun and satisfaction than buying one already cracked.

Do-it-yourself -- with some help from artist Gary Marshall. Trace his sample art (4 different designs) and follow his detailed instructions to create hand-painted cards. You supply the acrylic paint and brushes. Our each is (4) Strathmore 5" x 6-7/8" blank cards -- heavy, cream-colored card stock with dark blue deckle edges -- and (2) matching envelopes. If you're really good at this and mail your first (2), you can always paint on the undeckled side of the (2) extra cards and frame them.

Or anything else on your horizon with a very nice kids' Safari® telescope/spotting scope. CJ calls it a toy-that's-not-a-toy, which means that it's a 15X magnification, 35mm dia, 3-draw scope suitable for watching the moon, the fauna if you're in a Safari mood, or the approaching ships if you're in a Master and Commander mood. It's 7-5/8" long when closed, extends to 14" and comes with eyepiece and objective covers. We'll pick one with a red, yellow, green or blue plastic barrel.

Just like yours! But smaller. And more amphibian. Our 5-1/4" long, life-sized translucent green frog has colorful, anatomically correct organs, which means dissection practice without slimy parts and nasty smells.

Plus, of course, the one you already know how to make, but imagine how sick your kids are of that one. This highly origamian, 120pp book has the plans for (25) ingenious paper airplanes, including some stunt fliers. Our favorite is The Flying Pig because you can make "when pigs fly" jokes at meetings and then use the agenda to construct it. Written by David Mitchell for PRC Publishing.

Are we the Parents' Pal or what? No household with normal school-age children (ages 9-12) can afford to be without Sterling Publishing's 112pp hardcover book, "Last-Minute Science Fair Projects." Ten of them take "a week or two," (13) take "a few short days," but fully (22) projects can be completed in under (24) hours, a few in mere minutes. And yes, most everything you need is somewhere in the house so you won't need to find an all-night hardware store. Bonus: No baking-soda volcanoes!
