The Mother Of All Fresnel Lenses
It came from either outer space, or a projection TV. Our largest Fresnel lens measures 49-1/8" x 37-1/8" x 1/16" thick, with a 42" focal length. Build your own lighthouse or projection TV, teach optical properties to students, or just turn your 21-inch model into one with a tavern-size picture. Held in the sun, the lens will concentrate rays enough to cook eggs or torch lumber. And, under adult supervision in the parking lot, employees of a certain un-named scientific and surplus purveyor actually melted pennies in seconds. Extremely cool and done strictly, we assure you, to determine the lens's focal length. Do not, we shouldn't have to remind you, store this puppy in direct sunlight. Or let the underage or under-mature sneak it into the sunlight.

OK, it's a strip of copper 5-3/16" long x 3/4" wide x .041" thick, but CJ says if you "take this, a zinc electrode and a grapefruit to the science fair, you get at least a C." Equally useful for crafters and jewelry makers.

Looks like a cheap kid-sized tennis racket, but brother, this ain't for the kids. It's actually a fine way for adults to work on their upper-body strength and kill bugs at the same time. 18" long, with a 6" wide paddle lined with metal grid. A coil in the handle sends high voltage through the paddle when a button is pushed; hit a bug with it and the bug will bug you no more. But despite the manufacturer's claims that it's safe for people, Scott reports that flesh-paddle contact delivers a nasty shock, nasty enough to say "Keep this away from kids!" We've seen these in other catalogs for about twice the price, so buy it from us. Just be careful with it. 2 AA batteries, not included.

When Pigs Fly...
everybody watches in awe. This pig, maybe not quite awe, since it doesn't actually get lift-off. But the unpainted wooden version of our popular flying-pig paper automaton is fun to build and even more fun to watch it flap its porcine wings as you turn the side crank. Roughly 9" x 9" when assembled. It's made of pre-cut, 1/4" and 1/8" wood, and slides together, but could be permanently glued. For ages 8 and up, but a thoughtful dad could thrill younger tykes with it.
